L’Association internationale droit, éthique & science a été fondée en 1989 à Milazzo (Sicile) sous le parrainage du Conseil de l'Europe et de l'UNESCO , à un moment où la bioéthique a commencé à prendre une ampleur internationale .
A la suite des deux réunions internationales organisées dans cette ville (1989 et 1991), les participants ont souhaité maintenir l'esprit du réseau qui s'était ainsi formé et ont demandé à Christian Byk de l'organiser de façon permanente à travers des colloques et une revue i internationale, le Journal international de bioéthique.
C'est ainsi que , sous le nom de « Groupe de Milazzo », elle s'est peu à peu constituée en un réseau international et pluridisciplinaire de réflexion, de recherche et de débat.
